All good things must come to an end – and so it is with my little paperware business. I am finding this news surprisingly easy to share. I thought it might be difficult to say goodbye to something I’ve nurtured and grown and invested in for several years. Of course it tugs ever so slightly at my heartstrings {how could it not?} but it feels “right” to be closing the door on this part of my life at this time.

I’ve adored {for the most part ;)} the trials and tribulations of small business ownership – the experiences and opportunities have been exceptional. I feel privileged: to have been able to work from home whilst raising my children and also to have also known success in business. I also feel proud: I dared to dream out loud and in the process created something I can hang my hat on.

This has shades of déjà vu I know – I addressed a similar concern nearly a year ago. When that post was written I had full intention of dropping my business from full-time to part-time, however, fate had other ideas and I simply couldn’t say no – more wholesale clients, increased online trade, several features in print media, published in a design book and large corporate gigs requiring staff and little sleep.

However, even with all that growth and potential, I now choose “no”... with absolute gratitude of course, but still “no”. Why? Because I am being pulled in a competing direction by my other passion: education. I’ve been studying a BA/BTeach part-time for over 8 years, and now the time has come to make my qualifications and future employment my priority.

This doesn’t mean you’ve absolutely heard the last of me creatively though! That would never do. I will still be very much involved in the enterprise Making Spaces for its duration {which I’m very excited about – Sydney based creatives ought to take a peek}.

We’ll officially be closing our online stores on Thursday 30th June 2011.

Thank you SO MUCH for all of your support, encouragement, friendship, sideline cheering and all the rest. Words aren’t enough, but it’s sincerely felt I assure you. It’s been a wonderful ride :)

Office Accessories

If you haven't already cottoned on, there are a few things that are really important to me in terms of how I run my business (and my life in general). Some of these things include: Being mindful. Making conscious choices. Thinking about and taking into account my environmental impact. And this is what my latest range of office accessories is all about.

The fabric used to create this collection has all been reclaimed. My busy little friend Kirrily at needle vs thread makes beautiful handmade purses, bags, cushions and all sorts of lovely stuff. When she's done creating, scrap material remains... but rather than throw the waste out, she's saved it and passed it my way... and now, the scraps been given a new life as office accessories. Neat, huh?

Some of the designs are one off. Others can be reproduced in limited quantities. All fabrics are of exceptionally high quality - and there are some fantastic graphics in amazing colours.

Products will be listed in Etsy and MadeIt tonight and over the coming days. Be sure to take a peek!

This weekend just gone, Mr Forget-Me-Not, the mini Forget-Me-Not's and myself took a road trip... to Canberra! Why? So I could drop the above goodies (and more) at the designer concept store Shop Handmade

Ch-ch-ch-changes in the Forget-Me-Not camp

After much consideration, weighing up all the options and lots of internal to-and-fro, it has been decided that we will be moving from a full-time operation to a part-time venture.

The reasons are 3 fold:

1. For those who don’t already know, in my “spare time” I have been studying a double degree. As my study nears its end, I’ve the opportunity to pick-up employment in my new field

2. I need to get the actual degrees officially finished & that requires exclusive dedication from me

3. Probably the most pressing reason for the shift are the 3 amazing peeps that call me Mum. These little guys have been brilliant and tolerant of the chaos that is created as I juggle {and often drop} far too many balls… But I’d like them to not have to be. And frankly, I don’t especially want their memories of childhood to revolve primarily around hearing me say “Not now. I’m working/I’m studying/I’m busy” – more time with my family, at their pace, is on the agenda

What this means for Forget-Me-Not:
• We will be concentrating our business to our online stores
• We will, of course, continue to service our existing wholesalers and bricks & mortar resellers
• We will no longer be trading at monthly markets {effective end of financial year}
• We will no longer be offering special event & wedding stationery
• We will be retaining our existing commitment to trade at the following annual fairs for 2010:

Leura Village Fair: Saturday 9th & Sunday 10th October
Glenbrook Village Festival: Saturday 13th November
Wahroonga Street Fair: Sunday 5th December

It’s not without a heavy heart that these choices have been made. I adore market trading & connecting with customers face-to-face, as well as my valued friendships with other stallholders. However, I am also excited about what’s around the corner professionally and challenging myself in a new way.

And, as unliberated as it may appear, I’m also really looking forward to being “just a mum” at least some of the time!

One Year Later

I’ve long been of the mind that when I’ve bitten off more than I can chew, the only thing to do is to get chomping. Handy, given I’ve a habit of filling my schedule to over flowing very regularly.

However, just yesterday, this completely & utterly flipped me out.
Why?

Because I looked at what events I had upcoming – there are a lot of them - and suddenly was filled with fear.

Especially when I realised that one of those events was Leura Village Fair. This 2 day street market is a beautiful place to trade. The main street in Leura is closed for the weekend while shoppers meet the makers of locally and nationally produced wares. It’s bustling. It’s happy. Spring blossom are in full bloom, dropping their pretty pink flowers on passers by. It really is lovely.

So, why would this cause concern? Because this event also marks the first full year of Forget-Me-Not being a ‘real’ business, rather than something I wished I could do, but never had the confidence to make happen. At this time last year I was preparing for my big launch at the 2008 Leura Village Fair. I had decided to take a punt on myself, not *quite* convinced that I could pull it off, but willing to live with the regret of doing it as opposed to the regret of never trying. Somehow, it worked, and here I now am, building something that I really believe in and investing my time in design, creating & lots of paperwork!

Although still early days for Forget-Me-Not, it feels really good to have something tangible; that works; that has remained true to its initial eco ethos; that contributes financially to my household; and that I am truly pleased to wake up & do every day. I realised that the fear/concern/uncertainty I am feeling is because a) I never thought I’d be here and b) I really do have a lot on and wonder if I am up to the task ;)

To those who had a lot more faith in me than I ever had in myself, who have helped me get here, thank you.

There are four distinct seasons where I live... true Summers, Autumns, Springs... and Winters ~ where Jack Frost visits over night and snow can fall {as too, the temperature into the negative}. Whilst beautiful, once half way through, the Winter can also bring with it the blues... but not any longer after grabbing myself a pair of these lovelies from Rainbow Revolution!

My foot warming purchase was accompanied by the handwritten note "May your feet always dance with rainbow joy!". You know what? Right now, they truly are very happy feet!

Not long ago, Inner Earth Soaps inadvertently came to my attention via twitter ~ and boy am I glad they did...

Why? Because, Inner Earth make delicious organic {and often vegan} soaps & scrubs, designed & crafted in Bondi, with ingredients that would please the fussiest of gourmet providores… like pomegranate, bergamot, cranberry, apple and peach… and that’s just their Pomegranate Soap

Their range is extensive, their ingredients pure, and their presentation beautiful ~ I am currently working my way through the above pictured bar & can't wait to try more ~ make sure you stop by their shop to take a peek at their latest offerings!

Look what I've got! It's a very lovely Travelite Key Fob by Plus 1 Design! ~ this newest little accessory of mine has a lot riding on its' pretty paisley shoulders... you see, I'm fully expecting it to save me from the all too often "Where are my keys?? I can't find my keys?" moment. *And* {this is the part I love the most}... I can place a card/cash in the secure fully lined pouch, grab the lot, and I'm good to go.

Who we are and what we do

Forget-Me-Not is an Australian business offering unique designer stationery, proudly crafted by hand from environmentally conscious materials

Each piece has a production story…

… and is made from either 100% Australian recycled papers only from paper mills that hold environmental certification
… or sourced from fair trade co-operatives whose basic raw materials are waste paper, waste cotton fabrics from garment industries and agriculture waste (like banana fibre, straw and water hyacinth)
… often, our products contain a combination of both!

Minimal packaging is part of our design process, in line with our desire to be environmentally aware… because we believe that every little bit matters

This blog is our space to share some more about our passion for paper!
